Research Opportunities for Residents and Fellows

Dear AP, CP, and AP/CP Residents,
Pathology has many exciting research opportunities in labs that are at the forefront of their respective fields. This website was created with you in mind to assist you in identifying projects of interest. Those who engage in research will have the opportunity to participate in lab meetings, retreats, and seminars. More importantly, those whose projects advance significantly could participate in conferences and become co-authors in scientific publications. In addition to being involved in research projects and learning molecular and cellular techniques, you will also have the opportunity to contribute via your pathology expertise.
We understand that one of the major obstacles to overcome in engaging in research is the problem of finding free time. The American Board of Pathology allows up to 6 months of accredited training to be full time research. However, if residents want to spend more than 6 months on research, it will have to be done "outside" of the accredited training (i.e., additional years, either after the program or within the program). Residents should also consult the Residency Program Manual regarding research mechanisms:
"Projects should be conducted under the supervision of a faculty member in Pathology or Laboratory Medicine, and funding for these investigations is available through the faculty (who can solicit additional funding from the department if needed)."
In selected cases, funding for research will be provided by the Chair’s Challenge mechanism.
Research can be conducted during elective time, or during “down time” of any of the other rotations. Residents typically find that a more focused “full-time” effort is needed to initiate a project, but then that project can be continued a more part-time basis.
For those residents with an MD degree who desire not only research training but also a PhD degree, Yale offers an Investigative Medicine Program. Residents enter this program after completion of their residency training and pursue additional course work and research leading to a PhD degree.
