Now compare the histology of Scalded Skin Syndrome to a similar entity usually caused by drug hypersensitivity called "toxic epidermal necrolysis".
Which is more severe and why?
Can you think of other complications & types of S Aureus infections?
Scalded skin syndrome causes skin separation within the epidermal granulosa layer.. In contrast, toxic epidermal necrolysis causes desquamation at the dermal-epidermal junction, and is therefore much more severe because is removes the basal epithelial cells which are responsible for epithelial regeneration.
The etiology of toxic epidermal necrolysis is not entirely know, but is thought to be the result of autoimmune destruction of the epithelium.
Other complications of staph infections include: toxic shock syndrome, osteomyelitis, food poisoning, and pneumonia.
